Description

As the elderly population continues to grow, their mental health care needs will increase. Advanced practice nurses need to know the differences in the presentation of dementia, depression, and bipolar disorder within their geriatric patients. This session explores the differences between these disorders and describe the medication strategies to help optimize therapy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the different presentations of depression, dementia, and bipolar. disorder in the elderly, with emphasis on new onset mania and brief overview of medications used for each entity.
  • Review the roles of screening, diagnostic imaging, and taking a family history.x
  • Review the roles of screening, diagnostic imaging, and taking a family history.
  • Discuss, through the presentation of a case study, how to develop a differential diagnosis and the importance of obtaining medication and family history.
  • Explore, through open discussion, the need for mental health research in our elderly population.
