Objectives:
1. Identify causes of pain in the geriatric patient population which are a result of aging and immobility and disease states.
2. Define the differences between an opioid vs. non-opioid, types of pain medications, and appropriate uses for each type.
3. Describe the risk benefit burden of types of pain medications .
4. Generate a pain plan of care for types of pain that may be experienced by a geriatric patient.
5. Identify different pain medication mechanisms to provide pain relief to at- risk geriatric populations.
6. Describe the impact receptor activity has on treatment, side effects, and dependence in the geriatric population.
7. Explain federal rules and regulations for prescribing and use of opioids in long-term care, hospital, and community setting.
8. Discuss the indication, dosing, and conversions of methadone.
