For 40 years, GAPNA has been the voice for advanced practice nurses who work with older adults in a wide variety of practice settings. This presentation provides a historical perspective on the advanced practice nurse roles in gerontology. A chronological timeline is discussed on external forces and drivers of the role. The future of the APRN gerontological specialist certification is explored with a distinct focus on the impact to GAPNA and the survival of our specialty.
