Residents of long-term care increasingly have a diagnosis of dementia and/or chronic psychiatric conditions. Providers are seeing an increase in psychiatric emergencies including verbal and physical aggression, sexual aggression, suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, and noncompliance with medications, safety protocols, and smoking policies. This session addresses the risk factors for each of these emergent situations, management of the acute episode, and strategies for prevention. Case studies are used to illustrate best practices and pharmacological interventions are addressed where applicable.
