Patients with dementia can suffer from behavior issues that cause distress to themselves and caregivers. Severe symptoms often do not respond to behavioral interventions. This session provides an overview of dementia-related behaviors that may be targets for pharmacological intervention and an evidence-based medication algorithm pertinent in a primary care setting.

Older adults suffer with many chronic conditions that may require anticoagulation but also parallel the risk for bleeding. Appropriate risk vs. benefit analysis, coupled with appropriate drug selection, is necessary in achieving optimal outcomes. This session reviews the pathophysiology of thromboembolic disorders and appropriate therapy based on the drugs’ pharmacological activity, efficacy, and side-effect profile.
