This session provides an update on CMS regulations and surveyor guidance for skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). Particular emphasis is placed on the APRN’s role and responsibilities in following these regulations. Topics include, but are not limited to, unnecessary medications and treatments, infection control and antibiotic stewardship, trauma-informed care, freedom from abuse, neglect and exploitation, and physician visits and Conference Program 6 telehealth requirements. This session also will provide a brief discussion of the practice barriers of the APRN in the post-care care/long-term care (PAC/LTC) setting and an update on the progress to remove these barriers.

This presentation focuses on polypharmacy in long-term care (LTC) and zooms out to take a meta view of polypharmacy on patient populations in LTC settings, LTC staff, regulatory implications in skilled nursing, and how reducing polypharmacy positively impacts these same areas. This will help advanced practice nurses practicing in this setting to understand the broader implications of prescribing practices. The presentation includes realworld examples, as well as a case study of a LTC resident and how these efforts impacted her. The end of the presentation will include practical tips on how to reduce polypharmacy across populations as part of the interdisciplinary team in a targeted way.

As more states adopt full practice authority and expand signatory authority, nurse practitioners across the country are faced with a new responsibility, completing death certificates. Death certificates serve many purposes including closure for a family planning final arrangement, information for disease tracking, and important health information for state and federal statistic systems. This program reviews the history of death certificates since the 16th century, essential information for death certificates, diagnoses to avoid, and state guidelines and penalties. Cases studies with mock death certificates are used to present the correct completion method and diagnoses to avoid. It is vital that gerontological advance practice nurses understand their role in this important final document for our patients.

This session assists advanced practice nurses caring for the older adult with abnormal liver chemistries in the acute and outpatient settings. Patterns of injury portrayed in abnormal liver chemistries along with etiologies are explored and case studies encountered in practice are used to enhance learning.
