030 - ER/LA Opioid REMS: Achieving Safe Use While Improving Patient Care

‐ Sep 18, 2013 7:45pm

Presented by the Nurse Practitioner Healthcare Foundation, a member of the Collaborative on REMS Education (CO*RE), 10 interdisciplinary organizations working together to improve pain management and prevent adverse outcomes. The FDA is concerned about the continuing problem of severe adverse outcomes, including addiction, unintentional overdose, and death, of the inappropriate prescribing, misuse, and abuse of extended- release (ER) and long-acting (LA) opioids. There are mandated educational efforts and a list of competencies that all opioid prescribers should achieve: the FDA Blueprint. This workshop describes the CO*RE (Collaborative for REMS Education) Project, a group of 10 national organizations and several in-cooperation with organizations working together for the past 3 years to develop a comprehensive educational program that addresses this new FDA requirement for a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS) for opioid therapy.
