Part 1 of this session provides an overview of practical treatment strategies of the geropsych patient and covers the pharmacology of commonly used medications and pitfalls of therapy. Part 2 of this session focuses on dietary supplements commonly used by older adults and explains the differences in regulation of drugs, dietary supplements, medical foods, and functional foods. Approaches to answering patient and family questions are also addressed.

Part 1 (Gayle Scott):
• Discuss uses, scientific evidence, drug interactions, and potential adverse reactions of dietary supplements used by older adults.
• Explain differences in regulation of drugs, dietary supplements, medical foods, and functional foods.
• Describe effective methods of advising patients/families about dietary supplement products.
Part 2 (Rick Foley):
• Describe the anticholinergic burden giving specific examples of medications that have high burdens as well as potential alternatives.
• Discuss how the acetylcholine theory impacts treatment decisions and expected therapy outcomes.
• Identify the symptoms of depression in the geri-psych patient, understanding how the treatment can drastically impact outcomes of concomitant psychiatric illnesses.
• Identify the pitfalls of anxiety treatment and the dangers of over-treating, especially length of therapy, and the impact this can have on your patient.
• Compare and contrast neuroleptic malignant syndrome and serotonin syndrome.
• Discuss the differences in the typical and atypical antipsychotics, with specific emphasis on the limitations of the class and the side effects of them.
• Provide examples of the potentially inappropriate therapy and possible alternatives.
• Describe the impact of F-329 on treatment and documentation of care of the geri-psych patient.
