Infection is the leading cause of hospitalization and the second leading cause of death for hemodialysis patients in the United States, yet many dialysis facilities do not reliably follow basic infection control practices. Examine the rules and regulations surrounding infection control in the dialysis setting, identify common barriers to effective implementation of infection prevention programs, and review strategies to overcome those barriers.
